An explosion that occurred at a Bronx high school science lab has injured three with severe burns. The blast has affected about 3,000 students at John F. Kennedy Educational campus, who have had to relocate right at the beginning of the 2015-16 school year. The detonation occurred while workers were preparing the science labs – they were allegedly working on gas pipes feeding into Bunsen burners for several hours in a non-vented area – as a result of a worker lighting a match to test one of the burners. Damage from the blast sent debris flying several hundred feet from site and three of the building’s classrooms on the sixth floor were visibly blown apart.

Personal Injury Due to Explosions & Burns
Personal injuries resulting from explosions such as the one that occurred at the school can be serious or – even worse – fatal. The emotional, physical and financial damage experienced by victims and loved ones alike can often eclipse the monetary damage to property. In fact, it is estimated that over 400,000 people are injured every year in the United States as a result of an accident relating to an explosion, fire or burn. Unfortunately, approximately 3,000 are killed annually as a result of these personal injuries. The third leading cause of fatal home injuries, in fact, is an accident resulting from an explosion, fire or burn.
Under New York law victims of explosion, fire and burn accidents can recover compensation for injuries, property damage or death that may have occurred as a result of negligence that caused the accident. This also applies to first responders. Some of the laws that protect individuals from these types of accidents include:
The Multiple Dwelling Law, which applies to residential homes, details New York City housing standards by which landlords must comply.
Just like the near-fatal accident that occurred at JFK Educational Campus, more often than not the cause of an explosion, fire or burn accident is traced back to human error. Accordingly, it is not always easy to prove fault as the very nature of these accidents destroy most – if not all – of the evidence indicating the cause. For these reasons, it is important to hire a resourceful and skilled New York accident lawyers to handle your personal injury case.
